Breastfeeding Books for Kids

Bottles are ubiquitous in children’s books. If you want a book that includes nursing, however, the pickings are slim and make you realize just how good Sandra Boynton and Eric Carle really are.

These are what I’ve found in my search for children’s books about nursing. You may notice that none of them come with a glowing recommendation.

Breastmilk Makes My Tummy Yummy The drawings are bad, and the rhymes aren’t great, but it’s a board book and it shows people nursing, including toddlers and tandem nursing.

We Like to Nurse The art looks like it was done by a talented high school student, it isn’t a board book and it features animals rather than people, except for one illustration at the end. However, it is sweet.

I’m Made of Mama’s Milk This one has photos of people nursing, but they are mostly out of focus and have that yellow tone of faded 1970’s photos. It looks like someone called her friends and said “I’m going to do a book on nursing – can you send me your snapshots!” None of her friends were professional photographers, apparently. This one was so bad I actually didn’t buy it, which given my book addiction is a pretty damning review.

I swear, I’m going to do one. It couldn’t be worse than I’m Made of Mama’s Milk.

Stumble it!
