In the year I was completing my internship (and pumping for my older daughter) I think I counted 26 places in which I had to pump as a result of conferences, inservices, offisite trainings, site rotations, etc. Arranging for a place to pump was an enormous hassle. I always called ahead or contacted the coordinator of the event so that I could get through the whole, "no I won't pump on a toilet" conversation in advance. Nevertheless the majority of the time there was a problem when I went to the prearranged location (e.g. locked doors, janitors MIA, etc.) and in almost every case I was walked in on while pumping. The last day of my internship, I chucked my pump in my basement with great joy. Our society's absolute lack of support for "attached parents" plays a major role in why I have not returned to work, and is why my PhD. will likely remain tucked away in a closet until my family is complete and my las child has weaned (whenever that might be). I was just commiserating on the phone with someone today because his wife, a lawyer, cannot find one pace to pump in the entire courthouse when she is there for trial.
