I’m Published

Not here. I mean, of course I am published here but this is sort of the equivalent of the vanity press, only free, which, I guess, makes it even less prestigious than the vanity presses of yore.

I mean my article The Changing Hagiography of St. Æthelthryth is in the current issue of The Heroic Age. It’s a vestige of my former life as a medievalist. Academics rejected me. To be more precise Yale, Harvard, Northwestern, Fordham and a bunch of other schools all rejected me from their PhD programs. Yale rejected me three times. I don’t take a hint. Hurumph.

I thought about going back (to a significantly less prestigious school) while I am home with the kids and realized that being in a classroom with a bunch of 23-year-old PhD English students who’ve just learned how to throw around phrases like “the post-colonial deconstruction of the text…” or “when the ideology hails the reader into the text he or she contructs…” would be hellish. And, honestly, I’d feel sorry for any professor who had to deal with me. Teachers are the worst students.

It’s nice to get this little echo from my M.A. program, but, really, next time I get published off this blog I’d like to get paid.

Stumble it!
