The Sleep Log
We were going to try The No Cry Sleep Solution’s solutions, but then B had to go on a business trip so we’re back in a holding pattern. To torture myself (and to have something to show the pediatrician in two weeks) I’m keeping a “sleep log.” And, because I share all of my sleep woes, I’m sharing. Remember, they are almost a year now. Shouldn’t this be better?
| Date | Naptime | J Night Wakings* | F Night Wakings |
| at one month** | no consistent naps | at least every three hours | |
| at three months | no consistent naps | 2:00, 6:00 | |
| at six months | no consistent naps | 11:00, 3:00, 5:00 | |
| June 28 | 2:15 – 4:15 | 11:30, 3:00, 5:30 | 11:30 |
| June 29 | 11:00 – 11:15; 2:15 – 4:45 | 12:00, 3:00 | 4:00 |
| June 30 | 1:00 – 3:00 | 12:30, 4:00 | 11:30 |
| July 1 | 1:00 – 2:30 | 11:30, 3:30 | 1:30 |
| July 2 | 12:00 – 2:30 | 12:30, 4:30 | 11:30, 3:30 |
| July 3 | 12:00 – 12:45 (F), 2:00 (J) | 12:30, 2:30, 6:00 | 11:30, 2:00 |
| July 4 | 12:00 – 2:00 | 12:30, 2:30 | 11:30, 1:30 |
| July 5 | 12:30 – 2:30 | ? | ? |
| July 6 | 11:30 – 1:00 | 11:30, 2:30, 6:30 | 12:30, 4:30 |
| July 7 | 12:00 – 2:00 | 11:30, 2:30, 6:30 | 9:30.4:30 |
Bedtime is 8:00, they are usually down by 8:45 these days. They get up about 7:30.
* I’m only listing wakings that require intervention. If F gets up and sleepily looks at me while I am fetching J, then goes back to sleep once his noise stops, I am not counting that.
** One, three and six month data is from the baby book and was a rough estimate when I wrote it down. I am including here for comparison.

Oh god, the sleep log. I am finding it so much easier to stagger in to settle the boys without looking at the clock.
I have a referral to a residential sleep school, and I’m pinning all my hopes on them (a)having a vacancy when I am not insanely busy; and (b) sorting out all our sleeping woes in five nights. Realistic, much?

I’m so sorry. I think I’d be completely nuts if mine weren’t sleeping through. Mine also still take two naps a day, though the morning nap seems to be getting shorter.

I am so sorry you are still having sleep issues. Mine both sleep through the night and take 2-3 naps. I do have to seperate them at nap times as they just keep each other up, but at night they share a room and do good. I think we got lucky. I took away their binkies and that has really helped in their sleep. There is also a book that was recommended to me that involves a “sleep shuffle” that supposedly have good results….Good Night, Sleep Tight: The Sleep Lady’s Gentle Guide to Helping Your Child Go to Sleep , Stay Asleep, And Wake Up Happy
by Kim West an Joanne Kenen
Good luck – I wish you all of the best!!

Shouldn’t this be better?
It would be nice if it were, but I don’t think it’s outside the realm of “normal” or “typical.” Really. The only reason I get more sleep than you is that you have two and I have one, and my one is an easy family-bed-sleeper. Sanna was up almost hourly between 10 and 6 overnight. The longest stretch of sleep in there was the three hours she slept on my chest.

I sympathize with your night wakings. My children both sleep through the night, but now we have other issues. One of them requires that I be with her All. The. Time. (She’s four.) So if I put her to bed in her own room and don’t stay the whole night, she is apt to wake up howling at dawn’s first light, and she’s Extremely Pissed Off that I am not there with her. She hates me to get up earlier than her too, even if I slept with her the whole night!
The other child, who’s now nearly 7 years old, I have to get myself up twice a night to escort her to the toilet or else she will wet her bed. Nightly I choose between sleep or extra laundry.
Best of luck with your quest to find more sleep!

Hi! Just jumping over here after seeing your comment on my blog. I’d be honored if you’d add me to your blogroll. I’ve been a visitor to your blog before–your twins are precious!–and I hope to check in more as time allows. I’m sure we have lots of info we could share about twin napping habits! Thanks for visiting my blog.

Ugh! My little guy started sleeping through the night just at 12 months. He still naps twice a day.
Do they sleep in the same bed? same room? Could they be waking each other?
June 29th, 2007 16:14
No, I read somewhere recently that most kids do not sleep completely through the night until two. That was true for Z for me. S started sleeping through the night at 8 months.
Good luck. I know it is hard to believe you will look back and miss being needed for certain things, even if it was a long arduous phase when you were going through it.

yes, remind me how they sleep. do they nap together? share a crib? I can’t remember.
I’m about ready for the room transfer over here…. we’re nearing the four month mark and I know what is to come from past experiences if I don’t buckle down soon and start some SERIOUS sleep training.
keep us posted, Stacie.

They sleep in separate cribs in the same room. We co-bedded until about 4 months when F started kicking J in the head. As far as I can tell, F is occasionally woken up by J, but she is able to put herself back to sleep. He wakes up at predictable times, screams, then smiles a giant grin when I come to get him. He is happy and almost asleep after nursing, but when I put him back in his crib he arches his back and wails. Thus, the co-sleeping. If B gets up, B can put him down as well, but it takes him longer and, well, he has that whole “working for a living” thing for which he needs to be awake.

We don’t have twins but our eldest didn’t sleep consistently through the night until he was 4 years old…he’s ow 4 1/2. We hope to add sleep log functionality to Baby Manager (www.babymanager.com) by end of year. So much to do…so little time and so little money.
Thanks for including us in the blog carnival.

What time do they go to sleep and wake up?
July 2nd, 2007 13:11
Bedtime is 8, and they are usually actually down by 9, and they tend to get up at 7:30 or 8:00.
