We co-bedded until about 4 months when F started kicking J in the head. As far as I can tell, F is occasionally woken up by J, but she is able to put herself back to sleep. He wakes up at predictable times, screams, then smiles a giant grin when I come to get him. He is happy and almost asleep after nursing, but when I put him back in his crib he arches his back and wails. Thus, the co-sleeping. If B gets up, B can put him down as well, but it takes him longer and, well, he has that whole "working for a living" thing for which he needs to be awake. That was true for Z for me. S started sleeping through the night at 8 months. Good luck. I know it is hard to believe you will look back and miss being needed for certain things, even if it was a long arduous phase when you were going through it. My children both sleep through the night, but now we have other issues. One of them requires that I be with her All. The. Time. (She's four.) So if I put her to bed in her own room and don't stay the whole night, she is apt to wake up howling at dawn's first light, and she's Extremely Pissed Off that I am not there with her. She hates me to get up earlier than her too, even if I slept with her the whole night! The other child, who's now nearly 7 years old, I have to get myself up twice a night to escort her to the toilet or else she will wet her bed. Nightly I choose between sleep or extra laundry.
