A Monday in the Life
1ish – nursing
4ish – nursing
6:28 – Nursing. I’m a little worried that J won’t go back down after this one as he notices his father and is clearly very hopeful that Daddy will wake up and play with him. However, there is no problem.
7:00 – B’s alarm goes off. I remind him to make sure he didn’t just push “snooze” because the alarm wakes the babies as well. I can reasonably hope that they will fall asleep after one alarm, not after two. Or three. He does turn the alarm off. The morning noises will keep the babies in a state of waking, fussing, and dozing for the next hour.
8:00 – Well, now I have to get up. The “wake/mutter/doze” cycle is over and J is making “I mean it this time” noises. I get up, nurse the babies, change their diapers. F pooped, so I dump her poop in the toilet and rinse the diaper. I make our bed, change the sheets in the cribs and gather and sort all the laundry. I get dressed. I dress the babies.
9:00 – I start the first load of laundry. I mix up the babies breakfast, which right now is multi-grain cereal with banana and milk. I feed them.
9:15 – I mix up breakfast for myself. I’ve been on a blueberry muffin kick lately. One of the benefits of being home is being able to eat well. I also brew today’s pitcher of iced tea.
9:30 – Diaper change. F and J have both pooped so I dump poop in the toilet and rinse the diapers.
10:00 – The muffins are done. I eat breakfast. Each baby has a bite of muffin and several chunks of banana.
10:15 – Start looking for sale cloth diapers. The kids have just about outgrown their Kissaluvs and I want to switch to either pocket diapers or all-in-ones. I have just started using Bumkins and I really like them. They are $25 each. Youch!
10:45 – No luck with the cloth diaper search. I do update the Good Stuff page with diaper links, but the save fails and it is lost. We dance and sing to “One little, two little, three little babies.” I put in the next load of laundry, hanging F’s cotton tops and dresses to try so I won’t have to iron them. I read a story, then we nurse again.
11:00 – J is poopy. I change him, dump the diaper contents and rinse the diaper. I am now out of pocket and all-in-one diapers and have to use the Kissaluvs, which are too small.
11:15 – I clean up the newspaper the kids have strewn all about the living room. I put the papers in the recycle basket. What fun! They take them out again. Then they torment, meaning look closely at, the cat. I do manage to get a video of F hissing at the cat then put the cat behind the gate so she is safe from grabbing little fingers.
11:30 – F has tackled J. He did not appear to enjoy it, but now he is giggling so hard he has the hiccups.
11:45 – I order 6 Happy Heiney diapers, unable to resist the Japanese Crane pattern. J and I have a cuddle. I change F’s diaper. She and I sing and dance again.
12:00 – Another laundry swap. I take the first load upstairs. This is good because J’s blankie is in this load and it is nap time. I offer lunch, but other than a few bites of banana no one is interested. I pick up the newspapers again.
12:15 – I open the gate to the stairs and the twinlets race up the stairs. I pop them into their cribs. F is instantly interested in her new sheet, which has a print. About 5 minutes of J chirping later all babies sleep. I join them in nap land.
1:45 – The phone rings. It is the husband, who wants to tell me his new work phone number. I get up and put in the next load of laundry and put some lunch in the microwave to heat for myself.
2:00 – I eat lunch, then get the video of F off the camera.
2:15 – The babies are up. I go upstairs and put away the 2 loads of laundry that are done so far. They help by pulling items out of their bottom drawer and climbing into that drawer as well. They also enjoy the phone. We read “That’s Not My Pony”.
2:45 – I convert the video so that you can hear the sound and upload it to YouTube. Lunch is served (again). Banana. They are doing much better with finger foods.
3:00 – The video is finally done. I take the laundry baskets and dirty diapers downstairs but the towels are still drying so, though I take the last clean load out of the washer and start the diapers, I can’t do an actual laundry swap yet. I dump the dehumidifier’s bucket; it’s pouring rain today and, no surprise, it’s humid.
3:15 – I sit down to play with the babies. F immediately makes the sign for nursing. I sign it back and both she and J grin, gurgle and climb on me. We nurse. J bites me. He is not a good advertisement for extended nursing. I still have so much milk that when he pulls off mid-suck a fountain squirts out. Diaper change. F has pooped. Dump, rinse, soak.
3:30 – F brings me a book to read and crawls into my lap. She signs to nurse. I notice a whiff of unclean diaper. Yep, she’s pooped again. Diaper change. Dump, rinse, soak. While downstairs putting the diaper in the utilty sink to soak I fold the towels.
3:45 – We read books, cuddle and play on the floor.
4:00 – I start dinner, which will be 3-cheese pizza with mushrooms and pancetta. Yes, before you ask, I am making my own crust.
4:30 – The rain has stopped, so I gather and take out the trash and recycling. This causes both babies to have tantrums as I will not let them go out onto the front porch.
4:45 – Snack time. J lets me know he is done by whipping his bib around.
5:00 – The dryer is beeping. Time to fetch the next load of laundry. I fold.
5:30 – The dough is done so I start putting the pizza together. My mother calls. I talk to her while both babies take turns shrieking that I have dared to go into the kitchen where they can’t get at me.
5:45 – B gets home. J needs changing. B plays with the babies while I finish dinner.
6:15 – Dinner. Both babies try to climb out of their chairs.
6:45 – Fold the diapers.
7:00 – Both babies need changing. Both have pooped. What did I feed them yesterday? Dump, rinse, soak.
7:15 – Start the bath. While B bathes the babies I put away another load of laundry and lay out their PJs.
7:30 – Nursing, stories and bedtime.
8:00 – Easy night! They are both down.
9:00 – F is up, crying. Nurse her down.
11:30 – F is up. Nurse her down.

“What did I feed them yesterday?”
That was my thought after poop #9. Prune oatmeal sprinkled with X-Lax chips?

i’m seriously impressed. I need to take lessons from you…i can’t cook anything more complicated than mac & cheese from a box. My dh turns out gourmet meals, but can’t seem to get them on the table before 9-10 pm.

I’m even exhausted!
Also, not just a little shamed. You make your own crust with two babies in the house…I gripe when I have to pick up the phone to order one.

Flushable diaper liners are my saving grace. The rinsing and soaking would put me over the edge. Not that you asked, but we’re currently using BumGenius AIOs. But lately I’m coveting something more baby proof – M has taken to undoing her velcro if it’s not buried under clothing. I’ve been eying the Knickernappies Disposanots with their side snaps. We’ll see…

Wow. Supermom. I envy you. I read your daily routine and it seems as though it is something out of a movie. (where supermom lives) You go girl!

I got bit really, really hard for the first time yesterday. Enough to draw blood. I think it’s a sign confirming what I’ve been suspecting for a week that they are ready to drop the last nursing session we have. They’ve been less and less interested. I’M Just not ready yet though.
I had quite an exhausting day, but now I’m more tired reading yours

It’s SO weird to me that this looks impressive to people. I feel perpetually like I am not doing enough. I’m not playing with the kids enough. I’m not taking them outside enough. I’m not making nutritious snacks. I’m not doing all these things.

yup, impressive was my take. I’ll try to write down my day tomorrow. I can promise you there won’t be as many diaper changes. M&J only poop once every 2-3 days. Doc isn’t concerned but suggested MAYBE some prune juice but said it wasn’t necessary as they don’t seem uncomfortable at all. It’s been like this from day 1.

“One of the benefits of being home is being able to eat well.” Yet, why am I eating more poorly than ever?? I think I’m putting so much energy into what the kiddos eat, that I can’t remember the last time I ate a vegetable that wasn’t in a sandwich (lettuce or tomato).
You must be exhausted.

Yup, I’m impressed. I hope that once the babies get older I will be able to cook again. I just can’t seem to find the time to cook unless there is someone here to mind the babies while I’m in the kitchen. It seems like there is always someone who need to nurse or be held.

Hmmm, someone else’s babies poop as much as mine? I thought I had the World Champions. Sad to say, I long for a small bout of constipation. Just for a day or two. Please?

Too funny. I wish I could boast about making all the cover recipes from Bon Appetit, and my kids have been gone for years. Console yourself that if you were a working mom, gourmet cooking would probably not be a priority. I call you a “supermom”.

Love the way you play with babies so much and they sign for nursing. I am not doing near as much as you …even 1/10th .My boys haven’t learnt to sign back but I am not consistent enough.
S has just discovered teeth can bite and his is testing them out gently on my nipples but going all the way with my toes and his brothers LOL – eeewww too !
did you post your pizza dough recipe by the way ?
