Parenting Ideals Revisited
Now that we are well into our second year of this parenting gig I thought I would see how well my hippy/AP ideals have held up in the harsh reality.
Natural Birth Well, that didn’t exactly work out. Bummer. Maybe next time. (And, no, that’s not some kind of subtle announcement.) This is actually the reason I am letting my subscription to Mothering lapse; I am just so tired of the endless articles on how bad c-sections are. That guilt I don’t need.
Breastfeeding Still going strong and still planning on child led weaning. Check.
Babywearing No. Sigh. I like to think of myself as someone who baby wears, but I just don’t. The double stroller is so easy and they seem to really like it most of the time. No cookie for me.
Co-Sleeping and CIO We don’t co-sleep except when F demands it. J never does. In fact, J clearly prefers his own bed; when he is done nursing at night if I don’t promptly put him back in his own bed he lowers himself off of mine and heads back to his room. F would love to be in bed with us every night, but she tosses and turns and kicks and tends to think that our bed is a place to play, not sleep. When she really wants to be with us and nothing else will do, you can tell.
We did break down at 14 months and do CIO to get them to go to sleep at night. J shrieked in utter fury the first night for about 10 minutes. It lessened each night and within a week he was going to sleep easily. They still get up at night and I still go to them and nurse them at night. I think F wakes J up then sucks her thumb to put herself back to sleep because on the nights she co-sleeps he doesn’t get up as often.
Healthy FoodsWell, the good news is we eat more organic produce and far more locally produced produce than we ever have. I joined a CSA this summer and learned to love chard. On the other hand, the kids eat a lot more sugar than I had planned on or hoped for and I need to work on cutting the processed sugars out of their diets.
No TV About once every 2 weeks I remember that I like General Hospital at the same time that the show is actually on and take the kids down to the basement so I can watch it. They run around while the show is on. Other than that, no TV at all. I never put them in front of the TV and don’t use it to keep them distracted while I take a shower or make dinner.
Toys With a handful of exceptions I have stayed on the straight and narrow here. We have a few plastic things that people have given us and some flashy frogs I bought for the bathtub but for the most part we’re managing to only buy sustainably produced toys made by people paid a living wage.
Cloth Diapers We cloth diaper about 75% of the time. F gets the occasional rash that only seems to clear up with paper which is downright weird and I use paper when I am totally overwhelmed and stressed out. You can measure the stress of the day on the diaper/food scale. On a good day it’s cloth and gourmet; on a bad day paper and prepared foods.

Very very impressive to keep up with AP with twins. Very impressive.
I find the babywearing doesn’t work well with twin toddlers because jealousy rears it extremely ugly head. Times two. I’d rather save my energy for healthy foods and plenty of hugs.

We are proud of all you have done with the kids. You are both great parents.
Love & kisses

Sounds like you’re doing great!
Hey, on cloth diapers: what type do you use? What would you recommend? Now that my twins are closing in on 10 lbs we want to put them in cloth but need to sort through the bewildering array of options. Any suggestions?

I think you’ve done great. I surprised myself by not thinking I was crunchy at all until they were born. I didn’t want a natural birth and ended up with one vaginal and one emer. c-section. I breastfeed till they self-weaned (actually I think if I’m honest, past the point where they were ready to wean but I wanted to hold on for at least a year), I found I like baby wearing even though I don’t do it much and almost never now they are so big, They only watch Sesame Street occasionally, otherwise the TV is off, organic food I’ve slacked on, cloth diapers were a disaster (William got a really nasty rash no matter how often I changed him, doesn’t happen with disposible) and I’ve found myself trying to buy less and less plastic.

My favorite people are “mixed”: some things they do one way, some things they do another. When people are all one side of the line or the other, I feel like they won’t understand human failings.

I hope reading over that list helps you realize what an amazing job you’re doing as momma to those twins! I wish I could write a list like that, honest.

a parenting review…
Swiped from Stacie.
Natural birth. Well, if you don’t count the induction, narcotics and epidural, then sure, it was natural. A head emerged from my vagina, along with the rest of the baby and assorted baby bits. As unnatural as my birth may have…

Um, in a word, WOW!
November 18th, 2007 23:17
well - Stacie give yourself a huge pat on the back -you are brilliant seriously…though all twin mums rock whatever they do .
I had a c/s - both breech.
We cloth diaper now except on our recent holiday.
We don’t eat organic but try to stay healthy apart from the odd biscuit and potato crisp (*smack me*).We have way too many plastic toys mostly gifts. I have hardly bought any. I am working on it not to buy anymore
I have worn one baby at a time but a bit too heavy now.
They don’t care less about the TV but the little personal DVD screens in the car my DH just bought for our 3100km trip worked a treat …except he only set it up halfway in.They have so many feeds at the computer LOL.
We co sleep at night because it works … for me and BF . I am way to lazy to get up to them if they were in cots.

Hey this is one crunchy list mama! Yeah, you’re not raw food crunchy, but so what? Who wants to drink spinach and raspberry smoothies out of glass jars all the time? Besides, they still use plastic straws, (hehehehehehe! One day I will even ask if they are phthalate free just to make them all crazy!) At almost 18 months, you are totally rocking the AP twin mama scene.
