The Rice Cake Wars

I have recently introduced the babies to honey nut rice cakes. They taste like slightly sweetened styrofoam and, oddly, give the flavor name, contain no nuts. They are also wildly popular. Today I gave them each a half a cake and a few minutes later J came up to me signing “milk milk milk.” I looked at him and asked, “Where’s your rice cake.” F had it. She was clutching both pieces in her little fist. So I gave him another one. So she took it. I took it back from her, returned it to J and tried to explain to her that she couldn’t just take things from her brother, that she already had rice cakes and that he got to have some too. Then she chased him – actually chased him – around the house to try to grab his rice cake.

Did I mention these taste like styrofoam?

I finally had to hold her on my lap so J could eat his snack which he did, eyeing her and backing away from her slowly.

A few minutes later, when he was on my lap reading a book, still finishing his snack and F was across the room he dropped his dry, crunchy treat. She darted over and snatched it up.

Neither of them wanted any rice cake with dinner.

That cracks me up. Around here, Soren would want them just to collect them, not to actually eat them. I’ll have to get some though–we’re looking for ways to expand snacktime.

In light of the fact that she is the same child who adored eating snow so much she face planted in the bird bath, you are suprised she went nuts for styrofaom-like rice cakes? No no, makes perfect sense. :)

Sounds like you’re having fun. Did you ever imagine that toddlers could be so entertaining? What a difference a year makes, and just think, it will only get better. Love seeing their pictures. Thanks.

It’s a law of nature: The worse it sounds/tastes/feels to you, the more obsessed with it your children will become.

Thank you for making me smile this morning. It’s been the kind of crazy week where I needed that.

Who knew rice cakes would be so coveted? Only ice cream is the only food coveted that highly in our house… for good reason.

Ha ha! Cuties! Today Elizabeth shoved Edward and took his toy. Paul and I were saying that we’re half outwardly “No no don’t do that!” and half secretly “Yay, you go, tough girl!”

Heh. My boys get exactly the same food in their bowls and Angus always, always checks Ronan’s bowl, just in case. Meanwhile, while he’s doing it, Ro nabs something from his. It’s like clockwork.
