Amy tagged me with the 7 random facts meme. As it so subtly suggests in the name I guess it means that we have to reveal 7 facts about ourselves before passing the fun onto someone else. I don’t usually do memes just because I am usually too busy but I am trying to catch up on blog reading - there were over 500 messages in my reader - so this one happened to hit at just the right time.
The rules are:
- Link to the person who tagged you
- Post the rules here
- Share 7 random or weird facts about yourself
- Tag 7 random people at the end of the post, linking to them
- Leave a comment on their blog so that they know they’ve been tagged (not anonymously!!)
So…
- I have a spinning wheel and a loom though I haven’t used either in over 2 years. That whole “having twins” thing has made me put those hobbies on the back shelf.
- I think most teachers are dreadful and have no business being in the classroom. There is some truth to that old adage about “Those that can’t, teach.”
- The state of Kansas doesn’t think I am qualified to teach Latin because my graduate degree was awarded in Canada. As we all know, the training offered by the Canadian university system, especially the Centre for Medieval Studies’ Latin program*, is totally inadequate to meet the educational needs of the Latin 1 students of Kansas.
- I am seriously thinking about just quitting the online teaching job because the hassle of getting these reciprocal certifications isn’t worth it.
- I want to learn to crochet but have no time. Maybe this summer sitting in the park I can figure it out.
- I have a CD that is lullaby versions of Cure songs
.
- I managed to resist buying F a pink seersucker Ralph Lauren dress I found in Marshalls but I really wanted it. She has more clothes than I do.
And I am tagging Option Adoption, This Examined Life, Our Ladybug, Images by Jeri, Sarah and Jordan Updates, Poking and Peaking and Bits of Myself.
* Anyone who has made it through that program knows how rigorous it is.

As the product of a Canadian university education system, you would teach all those little Latin learners to add the requisite “eh” to their sentences. Oh, the horror! I also have a loom that I have decided I should give to someone who might actually use it but I can crochet. I learned from a Beehive pattern book, printed in the 70s but still available. Crochet is *so* relaxing and easier to let your kids help with than knitting (and it pulls out more easily too, if needed).

I love the Cure lullabies. It was our bedtime music for about 6 months.

I feel the need to disseminate this horrible abuse of the word meme, and what I posted at Hallqs page sufficiently gets across my point, so I’ll paste:
Sorry, but you are entirely misdirected about what a ‘meme’ is. A survey or chain letter or pass-me-on or whatever this is has no relation to the word. In order to not look silly or foolish, you should research terms before using them. You can’t make something a meme just by declaring it so, and if this was one, it would be instantly recognized and occur regularly in the social consciousness in various forms. All your base are belong to us and LOLcats are memes, ‘list 7 weird things about yourself’ is a survey at best, and a piece of unsolicited spam chainmail at worst. Also, a meme can’t be ‘invented,’ a meme just happens.

You’d think someone would have better things to do with their time than to go around to random blogs to criticize people.

I debated emailing him to say “Get a life” but decided not to bother.
The prescriptive use of the term “meme” may well only include things that spontaneously replicate like viruses across society but from a descriptive point of view the term has come to include blog games such as this so, frankly, I fear that I just don’t feel silly or foolish using the term in this way.
Also, if you’re reading this all your base belong to me and consider yourself tagged to go and list things about yourself.
