Bits of Randomness
F is getting very talky. Last night she said “circle”. Most of the time I can’t understand her but when she repeats words back to me or context makes it obvious I realize that she is talking English with a very heavy baby accent but English nonetheless.
One poop forward and two poops back on the potty training. We were doing some bare butt time yesterday afternoon and J was standing on a chair watching workers put a fence up in our backyard when I saw he had a big chunk of poop hanging out. I cleaned that up and tried to convince him to sit on the potty. Not interested. F sat down to show him and he hovered over the potty for about .3 seconds then moved on. OK. Then he pooped on the floor. A substantial poop. And stepped in it. And tracked it around.
It’s the glamour of motherhood that really appeals to me.
Afterwards I decided that I wanted him to have SOMETHING about his middle as he stood at the glass storm door and looked out at the world but he was very clear that he didn’t want pants. So I put him in a skirt. I can add “James, put your skirt back on” to the list of things I never thought I would say. No, there are no photos.
I just finished reading a terrifying book on marketing to children, Consuming Kids, that has really solidified my “no media” stance. I recommend it. I keep meaning to write a whole post updating my no media position and I’m sure I’ll get around to it sometime. You know, like before they graduate from college with degrees in communication.
I never know what to call the kids’ morning program. Is it school? Day care? 12 hours a week is a pretty dreadful day care because you certainly couldn’t get a job that would slot into that time but it feels silly to call what 1 1/2 year olds do “school.” They are learning things, however. F is now very good at putting her own coat on and this morning I watched her pull her own boots off, pull her socks off and then tuck each sock into a boot. They carry their bowls of snack to their little table and sit to eat. OK, so it isn’t “my kid can read at 7 months!!!” It’s age appropriate developmental stuff. I mean, I think they are brilliant of course but I’m not bullying them into being performing oddballs. That would take far too much energy.
They turned 21 months yesterday. It’s getting time to plan their second birthday party. I was thinking something like this. Or maybe just (gluten free) cupcakes and a wading pool in the backyard.

I vote for the $38k birthday party.
Mason says “circle”, too! It sounds like “yu-yu”. That’s the only shape for him so far.

Mason is chock full of awesome, it’s true. I think we all need to get together and play quints.
We spent $40 to rent out a park pavilion for the 2nd b-day. There will be juice, soda, cake and fruit. Oh, and balloons. Does that make me a failure as a mom? My house is too small to have everyone here (we tried last year), plus the park will have slides and swings. My yard has no shade at all, so the park it is.
I just put that book on hold at the library. Thanks for the recommendation!

Where do you find time to read? I can only read on my commute and during episodes of insomnia, and my kid is two.

Quints! We could scare people but we would have to dress them alike to pull it off.

I love this: “It’s the glamour of motherhood that really appeals to me.” Me, too. Do I or don’t I have barf on the back of my jeans?
I would call it preschool.
I’m not sure why, but the site takes forever to load for me. I click through to a post and go do something else; then click on comments and go do something else; then click “submit comment” and go do something else. I haven’t been commenting much because of it, but I keep checking back—not sure what makes it slow, or if it’s something on my end.

Oh my gosh, poop on the floor. Why is that so funny to me? I’m sure it wasn’t funny to you, and I’m sure it’ll come back to bite me when I’m potty-training mine.
Cupcakes and a wading pool sounds like a hell of a good party to me.

best of luck to you with the potty training. my girls wouldn’t poop in the potty and it was getting ridiculous- approaching 3 and still pooping in pull-ups. peeing on the potty, but no poop. so i, against my better judgement, resorted to bribing. chocolate chips for pooping on the potty. eventually they gave in and the first time alyson did it, she exclaimed, “It didn’t hurt!” Megan, eagerly watching the event, decided to try and there was no looking back. My third child has been completely potty-trained (with no help from me) since 17 months.

wow on the potty training .. motherhood is very glamorous poop de au - Mine won’t sit still long enough to do anything -except eat and even then they are up and down.
F - is a very clever girl

Stacie, your site is slow for me, too. Occasionally it crashes my browser. Fun!
I’d definitely call it school. My eldest was in a Montessori-like school from 16 mo to 4 years and she learned a LOT. Completely worth the money.
As for b-day parties, we stuck with backyard parties until she turned 6. The kindergarten crowd she wanted and my being enormously pregnant meant I wasn’t up to doing it in our space. After watching her friends (or their parents, really) continually try to out do one another, I think I’m going to stick to yard parties and cookies for the goody bag. Last year I even tried to discourage gift giving but it didn’t work at ALL.

I’d be really interested in reading a post about your no-media stance. I’ve been thinking of writing one myself; I even have a bunch of references bookmarked for when I finally get around to doing so. But it is so easy to keep a 17-month old away from a TV that we don’t even own. It’s when she gets older and hears all the other kids talking about Dora, Spongebob, or whoever else is the character of the day that I expect this stance will get challenging! My daughter goes to preschool/daycare/whatever for 12 hours a week, too. We call it school, only because it is an easier word for her to learn to say. She learned how to go down a slide as part of their ‘no toddler left behind’ policy.

OK, I think I have fixed the slow thing. Of course, I accidentally blew away my sidebar in the process but I fixed it.
No media stance post to come.
Fortunately the kids’ school (and I’m taking your advice and just calling it school) doesn’t allow any character clothing at all so that will help on the no media thing. And Hippy Playgroup is not media-free but media-lite.

I don’t even want to THINK about the second birthday party. I mean they’ll never remember right?
