A Parenting Progression
- My children won’t have any sugar. 1
- My children will only have treats made with organic cane syrup.
- If a cookie from Starbucks gets us through a trip to the mall without a meltdown, bring it on.
1Yes, (Jennie), I know that EVERYTHING has sugar in it when you are talking about food as chemistry. I mean sugar as in “Contains: Wheat, Sugar, Fructose, Sucrose, Corn Syrup, Peanuts, Things You Can’t Pronounce and Red #5″.

Oh yes - this definitely resembles my progression as well. Last weekend it was “well, since we got the pastry from the nice french baker at the farmer’s market, it’s not that bad, right?” The kiddos love it!

K was indluged in her first (1/4th) of a slurpee the other day, so that my grumpy tired husband could enjoy the rest of it in peace. She was flying on a huge sugar buzz. Oh well….:)

Hah! So very true.

Oh so familiar.

I so did this! That and “my kids will not watch TV.” Yeah, that didn’t work either.

ahhhh….yes. That sounds familiar.

When I saw your blog’s name on a twin blog’s blogroll, I just about fell over. My sister and I call ourselves “twinkies,” but I had never met another family that used that term.
Love your blog!

I was like this with juice.
He’s three and loves it now.
Sigh….

Haha, I was thinking it but I wasn’t going to say it. 0=)

Dunno, maybe I’m an idealist…. or maybe MJ is just still cooperative, but a cup of cheerios still works for us. I hate it when moms bring chocolate chip cookies to story hour or art class. I mean, my kid doesn’t want that crap until she sees some other kid eating it….

That’s why we all set our expectations so high, so that when we’ve got to let them slide we’re still in a pretty good place. At least that’s what I’m telling myself, anyway.

We’re still the tv holdouts. Once they hit 2 I plan to get Mr Rogers DVDs though.
I don’t bring junk to playgroups - I bring fruit, LaraBars, rice cakes etc. There are so many kids with food allergies in my parenting group that you have to be super careful what food you bring.
Of course, I DID make peach sorbet for the art group at my house in (crap - where did the day go?) 30 minutes. With sugar. And organic peaches. And I emailed both of the other mothers to make sure there were no peach or citrus allergies.

My kids have never had tv (we don’t have cable so we get zero reception) but I try to be careful of the sugar. The result? They go *insane* on Valentines Day, Easter, Christmas, etc when other people give them mass quantities of sugar.
We have to be so careful of the floodgates we open. Once we asked a waiter if there was some kind of slushee the kids could have. Do you know what my little angels all order in restaurants now?
“Virgin strawberry daiquiri please”
Argh.
