Also that the island has few businesses and is periodically deluged by tourists emerging from the ferry. Based on my experiences on similar islands, this sort of thing could be quite profitable. We also know that the ferry goes to a city not entirely unlike NYC. So, Emily's mom makes cash by milking the tourist business; the police department supplies the dog food. I don't think we know anything about Mr. Howard's job except that he wears a tie; I've always assumed that Mr. Howard is taking the ferry to work at the crack of dawn each morning to work-- perhaps on Wall Street. All of that seems pretty fragile given current economic conditions. A year from now I can totally see Clifford rampaging the coastline and eating unsuspecting citizens.
