Kali’s Story
Kali was born June 22, 2006. She was perfect in every way. Then, when she was 4 months old, she had her first seizure. She stopped smiling and cooing immediately, would constantly jerk, her eyes would roll into the back of her head and she was unable to hold her head up.
The diagnosis was infantile spasms, the most catastrophic epilepsy diagnosis for a neurologist to give any parent.
Determined to provide a future for their child, the Holderfields have been to over five neurologists and two neurosurgeons. Kali has been on over 18 seizure medicines, the keto diet and they have considered the VNS. Her EEG’s have shown that she can have over 200 seizures on any given day. She may also suffer from cortical vision impairment. She is fed via g-tube and bottle, receives physical and occupational therapy and and will soon add speech and developmental therapy to her regimen.
Dr. Chugani, at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, has agreed to do a new test, a FMZ-PET scan, free of charge. This scan will not only determine if she is a candidate for surgical treatment but will help the research in progress to develop treatments for other children suffering from this devastating form of epilepsy.
Much of Kali’s care is covered by insurance, but it will not cover out of state visits. Although the main scan is being donated by Dr, Chugani the family has to pay for all other tests, the hospital stay, monitoring and the consultation.
