Weaned
Saturday, January 16th, 2010 by StacieWell, I think I can officially just about claim the children are weaned.
James – months ago sometime in the summer – latched on one morning and claimed that that side was “broken” so he tried the other. Lo and behold, that one had no milk either. I told him he had drunk it all and suggested he go get a cup of milk. He was amendable to that. He has since, including last night, put his mouth on a nipple as if to nurse a couple of times but then pulled away and laughed.
Fiona kept on going after the milk was gone. The feeling of having a child nurse when you have no milk is really icky. When I was cutting down on the nursing I used the “count to 10″ trick wherein you count to ten and the child has to stop when you reach ten. Once the milk was gone I counted REALLY fast. She got so she only wanted to nurse if she was hurt, and then settled for cuddling. I thought she had actually forgotten how to latch as one day she went to nurse and then pulled away, confused.
About 2 weeks ago I did breastfeeding portrait day to get some images for the Connecticut La Leche League conference in April and as the last mother nursed Fiona decided to explain how SHE had once nursed and sat in my lap and explained how she had positioned herself, and so on and so forth. No latch though. Then last night she actually latched on for a few seconds. No milk though.
3 and a half years. I think that’s pretty standard for child led weaning if you don’t have another baby to freshen up the milk supply.
